Zig Zagging

Ceramics 1
Class of 2025
This is my first time working with clay since the fourth grade. In fourth grade I took a ceramics class but it was very basic and we did not do too much. This semester I have learned how to throw bowls on the wheel but my final three pieces are all slabs. I did not find working on the wheel fun and liked working with slabs more. For each of my pieces I would roll the clay, then put them into the slab mold to form it. Then, I would wait for the piece to get a little dry before I put my zig zag designs into it. After I put the design into it I would wait again for it to get a little drier so I could carve out the designs and there would be a form. After this, I would bisque fire and then glaze. For my glazing colors I chose white, green, and blue. I chose these colors for two reasons. One because they are the colors of my family and I’s favorite college, Notre Dame, and it is also the colors of my school, Trinity. My technique for glazing these pieces were to dip the whole piece in white glaze to start. Then after dipping I would wait for the white to completely dry. After it was completely dry I would paint over in blue and green on different zig zags for at least 3 layers. From looking at my work I hope that you can take away that ceramics is meant to be fun and you can create whatever you want with only little experience.
